Grandma Nell Fixed the Fence. Waffles Brought Lumber.
Grandma Nell is on her knees by a weathered wooden fence, a hammer in one hand and a nail pinched in the other, her curly gray hair and glasses angled toward the board. She wears a gray cardigan over a blue plaid shirt, with a pair of garden gloves resting on the ground beside her. Waffles stands right at her shoulder with a long twig held firmly in his mouth, his red and white coat bright in the sun and his brown eyes watching her hands. Flowerpots, fallen leaves and a house with siding in the background show a yard that is always in use.
Beagles love to carry things in their mouths, and a stick is an irresistible prize, but sticks can splinter and injure the mouth or throat, so a rubber or rope toy is a safer choice. During repairs, keep nails, screws and small tools picked up from the ground, since a Beagle's nose can lead him to sniff and taste whatever it finds. Keep your dog away from paint, sealants and other chemicals, which can be harmful. Beagles are also escape artists, which makes a good fence especially valuable, so mend any gaps. Teach a drop it cue, and reward your dog for bringing a toy and letting go.
The fence will be fixed by the end of the day, and Waffles will be proud of his part in it. A biscuit may be in order.
