Elderly couple in cream sweaters asleep in a recliner while an orange flat-faced cat naps on the armrest beside them 1 / 33

Harold and Bev Sat Down to Watch Their Show. Toffee Had a Better Idea.

The television is dark, the coffee mug on the side table has gone cold, and nobody in this living room is awake to notice. Harold and Bev have sunk into the big beige recliner in their matching cream cable-knit sweaters, her head tucked against his shoulder, his reading glasses still perched on his nose. Right beside them, stretched along the padded armrest of the next chair, Toffee the red tabby Exotic Shorthair has joined the nap with his eyes squeezed shut and his front paws neatly crossed. A stack of paperbacks, a folded knit blanket and a little pile of toys on the floor finish the picture of a well-loved afternoon.

Exotic Shorthairs are often called the lazy person's Persian. They share the Persian's round face, short nose and sweet, mellow temperament, but their plush coat is short enough that a weekly comb-through usually keeps it in good shape. They tend to be affectionate and fairly quiet, and many happily spend hours lounging near their people rather than racing around the house. That flat face does come with some care needs: their eyes can water, so a gentle wipe with a soft damp cloth is a common routine, and they can be sensitive to heat. Keeping them cool and indoors on hot days, and checking in with your vet about breathing or eye concerns, is a smart habit for any flat-faced cat owner.

Some households run on schedules. This one clearly runs on naps, and Toffee seems perfectly fine being the one who decides when they start.
