Grandma Ruth Lifted the Lid on the Old Piano. Cocoa Hopped Onto the Bench.
The old upright piano has seen a lot of songs, and Grandma Ruth is playing another one. She sits at the keys in her quilted olive vest and gray sweater, her hands resting lightly on the ivory and her eyes on the music. Beside her on the bench, Cocoa sits proudly with his paws together and his long ears hanging, looking straight ahead as if he were the accompanist. A lamp, a candle and some papers rest on the top of the piano, and a window glows behind them. It is a very sweet duet. A little sheet of music leans against the stand.
Music is a lovely companion for older adults, and many people find that playing an instrument keeps their hands and minds busy. Dogs have excellent hearing, so a steady, gentle tune is usually fine, though loud or sudden notes can bother some. Let him get used to the sound at his own pace, and give him a quiet spot if he gets nervous. A piano bench can be a nice place for a dog to sit, but a Dachshund should not jump down from it, since the drop can strain his long back. Lift him down gently. Ask your vet about protecting his spine.
Ruth plays and Cocoa listens. No applause is needed, only a seat near the music. The room is filled with the soft sound of it.
