Smiling grandma in glasses hanging white sheets on a line while a chocolate Dachshund leaps beneath them 30 / 31

Grandma Ruth Hung Out the Sheets. Cocoa Raced Right Through Them.

AI imagedachshundlaundry dayclothesline

Clean white sheets billow from the clothesline, and Grandma Ruth peeks out from behind them with a big, bright smile. She wears glasses and an olive quilted vest over a denim shirt, and a wooden clothespin is in her fingers. Beneath the fabric, Cocoa is mid-leap, his front paws lifting and his blue collar showing, long ears flying as he races between the sheets. A laundry basket and a few garden pots wait on the ground nearby. It is a very lively wash day. The whole yard smells of soap and sunshine.

A line of laundry can be a wonderful playground for a dog, but it deserves a little caution. Clothespins are small and can be swallowed or break into sharp pieces, so keep them out of reach. Detergent, bleach and fabric softener can also upset a dog's stomach if licked from damp fabric. Dachshunds are quick and curious, and sudden dashes can strain a long back, so try to keep his play on level ground and away from slippery spots. Make sure the yard is fenced before he runs free. Rinse his paws if he runs through any soapy water, and talk to your vet if he nibbles on any cloth.

Ruth laughs, Cocoa races and the sheets keep dancing. Wash day has never looked so happy. It is hard to stay serious with a dog like that.
