Ruth Sipped Her Coffee While Misty Waited for Her Turn to Talk
Steam rises from a striped mug as Grandma Ruth takes her first sip of the day, eyes half closed. She sits on the concrete steps in a navy quilted vest and jeans, and right beside her Misty keeps a polite watch. The blue point Siamese has tucked her paws together, tail curled along the step, and tilted her face up as though waiting for news. Around them the yard is a charming jumble of gardening gloves, a woven basket, a coiled green hose, potted plants and a few fallen leaves.
Morning routines can be especially good for pets. Cats thrive on predictable habits, and a regular quiet time with a favorite person helps them feel secure. For people, a slow start with a warm drink and a purring friend is a pleasant way to ease into the day. One word of caution if coffee is part of your ritual: caffeine is not safe for cats or dogs, so keep mugs out of reach and don't let your pet lap up spills. The same goes for tea, chocolate and anything sweetened with certain artificial sweeteners. A little fresh water in a bowl on the step is a far better offering. If you suspect your pet has tasted something harmful, call your vet.
Misty does not ask for coffee. She asks only for attention, which Ruth gives in generous, unhurried amounts. The day will bring chores and errands, but for this one quiet stretch, there is the warm mug, the cool air and a cat who thinks the porch steps are the best seats in the house.
