A Maine Coon Follows Nora Through the Pumpkin Patch Like a Shadow

The pumpkins are scattered like orange lanterns across a dusty field, and Nora is strolling among them with a happy, unhurried gait. Her cream cardigan is soft against a denim shirt, and a canvas bag hangs from her shoulder. Close behind, Maple the Maine Coon pads along the path with her tail high and her green eyes looking right into the camera, fluffy and confident. Hay bales stack up in the background, a wooden fence runs along the field's edge and dry vines curl along the ground.

An autumn outing with a cat takes some planning, since not every cat enjoys the outdoors. A secure harness and leash are important, and a quiet place away from crowds and dogs is kinder to nervous cats. Fall fields come with their own hazards. Some ornamental gourds and decorative plants can upset a pet's stomach, and moldy or rotting pumpkins are best kept out of reach. Plain, fresh pumpkin is sometimes included in pet diets, but check with your vet before offering it. Fleas and ticks are also active in autumn, so a post-walk coat check and brushing are a good idea, especially for a Maine Coon's long fur.

Nora stops to look over a pumpkin and Maple sits down to wait, looking like she is considering it too. The air smells of dry leaves and earth, and the afternoon is slow. There is no rush to choose the best pumpkin in the patch. Half the pleasure is the walk itself, with a loyal tabby following along.
