Grandpa Was Stuck on One Clue. The Dog Seemed to Have Ideas
Gus holds his pencil above a half-finished crossword, glasses low on his nose, thinking hard about one stubborn clue. A mug of coffee, a plate with toast and blueberries, and a set of keys crowd the old wooden table. Beside him, Biscuit sits upright with her ears forward and her mouth slightly open, staring at the paper as though she has a few suggestions. Evening light glows in the kitchen window and fruit sits in a bowl on the counter.
Word puzzles are a popular way for older adults to keep their minds active, and many people enjoy them as a daily ritual. Having a pet nearby can make that routine feel even warmer. A dog like a golden Retriever is eager to be part of whatever you are doing and is often happy to sit beside you for a long stretch. Keep a few things in mind at the table, though: toast and fruit are fine for you but some foods, like grapes, are harmful to dogs, so keep your plate out of reach. Offer a chew toy or a bowl of water to keep your dog settled while you work. If you are concerned about what your dog has eaten, call your vet.
The clue may take a while longer to solve, but nobody in the kitchen is rushing. Biscuit is content to watch, and Gus is content to be watched.
