Grandpa Took One Bite of His Sandwich. The Cat Moved Right In

Harold holds a sandwich stacked with lettuce, tomato, and meat, and his smile is warm and amused as he looks at the cat studying it. Smoky sits beside him on the old bench with her silver ruff puffed and her pointed nose almost touching the bread. Her green eyes are steady and her tail is tucked beside her. Behind them a messy yard stretches out with a blue watering can, a basket, a clothesline, and a few toys scattered on the grass.

Many cats are curious about human food, and the smell of deli meat can be especially tempting. Some foods are not safe for cats, though. Onions, garlic, and some seasonings are toxic to them, and processed meats are often high in salt and fat, which is not good for her. Cats are carnivores and do best on a complete cat food, with a little cooked, plain protein as an occasional treat only if your vet agrees. Maine Coons are big cats that can gain weight, so portion control matters. If you share a snack outdoors, keep your plate out of reach and offer her own treat instead.

Harold is trying very hard to look innocent, and Smoky is trying very hard to look hopeful. Whoever wins this standoff, the lunch is a lovely excuse to sit together in the yard.
