Grandpa Was Three Clues From Finishing. Then Slate Sat Down.
The crossword is half done, the toast is half eaten, and Slate has parked herself right beside the puzzle like a very serious editor. Grandpa peers down through his glasses, pencil hand resting on the newsprint, while the blue-gray cat stares straight ahead with wide green eyes. A mug of coffee, a glass of water, and a plate of crumbs fill the table, and soft morning light slips through the curtain behind them.
Look closely and you can read the whole routine: the pencil lying ready, the napkin folded beside the plate, the cup within easy reach. Slate's coat is the color of rain clouds, and her ears are angled forward as if she is following every move of the pencil. Grandpa's expression says he is fully committed to the puzzle, even with a watchful assistant.
Russian Blues are known for that plush, silvery coat and a quiet, gentle personality. Many of them bond closely with one person and like a calm routine, which makes a slow breakfast with a puzzle a perfect fit. They tend to be observant rather than pushy, so you will often find one sitting nearby, watching, instead of demanding attention. Predictable mealtimes, a cozy spot near the family, and a little daily play usually keep this kind of cat content. If you ever notice a sudden change in appetite or behavior, that is a good moment to talk to your vet.
Seven across may stay unsolved for a while, but nobody at this table seems to mind. Some mornings are simply about good company and one more cup of coffee.
