The Rocker Creaked Softly While Slate Dreamed at Grandpa's Feet
The wooden rocker has been tilted back just a little, and Grandpa rests there in a knitted cardigan with a calm, faraway smile. At his feet, Slate sleeps curled on a woven blanket, chin on her paws, tail wrapped around her body. Sunlight pours through the lace curtains and warms a room full of books, photographs, and a plaid throw.
The cozy clutter around them hints at a long life lived in this room. A pair of glasses, a stack of paperbacks, and little keepsakes sit on the shelf beside him. Slate has chosen a spot within his reach, close enough to feel his presence without being underfoot.
Rocking chairs and cats are an old and comfortable pairing, but a bit of care keeps everyone safe. A cat sleeping beneath a moving rocker can easily get a tail or paw caught, so it helps to give her a bed a few feet away or to rock slowly while watching where she is. Cats like to sleep near people they trust, and a soft blanket helps retain body warmth. If you want to encourage naps in a safe place, put a cushion or folded blanket by your favorite chair.
The rocker keeps its easy rhythm, and the cat keeps her dreams. Nothing here is urgent, and nobody is checking the clock. The afternoon has simply settled into the room, and the two of them have settled right along with it.
