Pebble Claimed the Passenger Seat of Grandpa's Old Pickup
The old pickup has a big wooden steering wheel and a seat worn soft with years of use, and Pebble sits in the passenger spot as though she owns it. Her golden eyes are calm and steady, her round gray face turned just slightly away. Grandpa leans against the door in a cream cardigan, one hand on the wheel, a quiet smile on his lips.
Through the window behind him you can see a garage shelf packed with pots, tools, and watering cans. The light is warm and low, and the whole truck feels like a place with a lot of stories inside.
A car ride with a cat deserves some planning. A cat is safest in a secure carrier, buckled in or wedged in so it will not slide, since a loose cat can distract the driver or be hurt in a sudden stop. Never leave a cat alone in a parked vehicle, because temperatures inside can rise or fall dangerously fast. Exotic Shorthairs have flat faces and can overheat more easily, so keep the cabin comfortable and bring water. Short trips and a familiar blanket usually help calm a nervous traveler. Ask your vet about easing a cat into car rides.
The truck is not going far today, and that suits both of them. Some friendships only need an old seat and a good view.
