Otis Read Out Loud and Pepper Didn't Miss a Word
Otis holds an open book in both hands, reading in a low, warm voice while Pepper listens beside him on the couch. Her ears are lifted and her eyes follow his face, as if she hopes the next sentence is about her. The room is cozy, with a knitting basket, blankets, and a plant in the corner and soft light across the cushions. A few pages are creased from years of rereading, and the lamp casts a pale gold on the cushions between them.
Reading aloud can be calming for a dog, even if she doesn't understand a word. Many dogs relax when they hear a familiar voice in a steady rhythm, and a regular quiet routine can help a nervous pet feel safe. A Shih Tzu is a good audience because it likes to be near people, and it often chooses to sit on the couch or lap during quiet time. If a dog seems restless, give her a chew toy or a short walk before settling in. A dog that is accustomed to quiet routine often finds it easier to relax during the rest of the day too.
Pepper has plenty of patience and some real interest. Otis turns the page with a small smile, and the pages whisper beside her. A good story and a good listener make the room feel warm. The ending is still a few chapters away.
