Otis Scattered the Feed and Pepper Walked Right Into the Flock
Otis crouches in the yard and sprinkles feed across the dirt in a thin golden rain, while four hens crowd around him pecking busily. Pepper has joined them, her scruffy head lowered and her nose close to the ground as she sniffs among the feathers. A wooden coop, a pile of old boards, and a fence frame the backyard, and the afternoon is calm and bright. The hens in front are a mix of ginger and brown, and a black one waits at the edge, ready for her share.
Dogs and chickens can live together with care. A small dog like a Shih Tzu is usually more curious than aggressive, but chickens are easily scared, and a dog may chase out of instinct, so supervise their time together and keep her on a leash when needed. Chicken feed and droppings are not good for dogs, so keep her from snacking, and wash hands after handling poultry. A vet can advise on parasites and safe barnyard habits. A fence between the coop and the yard can help everyone feel safe.
The hens are unbothered, which says a lot about how calm Pepper is. Otis keeps scattering feed while his small companion explores. It is a peaceful bit of farm work, and everyone seems happy with their place. Chores are always nicer with company.
