Two Inspectors Walked Into the Vegetable Garden. The Lettuce Worried.

Rows of lettuce, kale, and feathery carrot tops are the main attraction in the vegetable garden, and two inspectors have arrived. A white and tan Jack Russell Terrier leans in with his sharp, scruffy face lowered, brown eyes locked on the soil. Nose to nose with him, a pink piglet snuffles between the leaves, her snout wrinkled and her ears pricked. A wooden fence, a blue bucket, and ripening tomato vines climb the background.

A garden is a feast of scents for a dog and a pig, but it also holds a few hazards. Some common vegetable plants, such as tomato leaves and onions, can upset an animal's stomach, and fertilizers and pest sprays can be harmful. Keep these out of reach and fence off any beds that are off limits. Pigs are natural rooters and can turn a garden upside down in an afternoon, so many owners set aside a special digging area. Jack Russells love to dig as well, so the pair could easily team up on the lettuce. If your pet eats something unusual, call your vet.

We will call the piglet Pearl. She is fascinated by the kale, and the Terrier seems more interested in whatever might be hiding under it. Neither of them knows the rules of gardening, and both are delighted. The vegetables may not survive the visit, but the two of them will certainly have a story to tell.
