A Shih Tzu Rested His Chin on a Box and Found Five Little Surprises
Chin resting on the edge of a cardboard box, a black and white Shih Tzu is gazing with big, round eyes at the five ducklings inside. They stand in a neat line, from the tallest at the back to the smallest at the front, with their pink bills pointing toward the camera. The room around them is cheerfully lived-in, with a gray laundry basket, a plaid shirt and a worn slipper sitting on the floor.
Shih Tzus are small, friendly dogs bred as companions, and they are known for a sweet, people-loving nature. Their long coats need regular brushing, and their facial hair can get in their eyes, so many owners keep the face trimmed. A Shih Tzu is typically calm, which can make introductions to other animals easier, but ducklings are fragile and should never be left alone with any dog. A cardboard box can serve as a short-term holding spot, but ducklings need a brooder with warmth, non-slip flooring and fresh water, as they can develop leg problems on slick surfaces. Ask your vet for help with setting one up.
The dog's expression is pure fascination. He does not poke or nudge; he simply watches, as though trying to memorize each of them. The ducklings stand in a row like a very small choir waiting to be conducted. Cardboard boxes have a long reputation for attracting pets, and this one is attracting the whole household. It may be the best-attended box in the building.
