A Gentle Dog Leaned Down to Say Hello to Five Curious Ducklings
On a wooden floor, a tan and white dog in a blue collar bends his head all the way down until his nose almost touches the beaks of five yellow ducklings. They have gathered in a half circle in front of him, each one looking up with bright, curious eyes. Behind them a row of sandals, a laundry basket and a warm patch of sunlight make the room feel lived-in and calm.
Sniffing is how dogs learn about the world, and a dog has tens of times more scent receptors than a person does. A first sniff is the polite way for a dog to say hello, and it is a good sign when the dog stays relaxed and gentle. Mixed-breed dogs can be as varied in temperament as in looks, so each introduction should be taken slowly. Ducklings are fragile, so keep the dog's contact short, watch the body language and never leave them alone together. A vet or trainer can help you teach a dog how to meet baby birds safely.
The dog's face is soft and a little careful, and his whole body is tilted toward the ducklings. He looks as if he is meeting a group of very small, very important guests. The ducklings stay where they are, curious rather than afraid, with their pink bills lifted. It is a perfect first hello: quiet, polite and full of wonder. Whatever happens in the next minute, it began exactly right.
