The Cavalier Saved a Seat on the Porch Steps for Some Tiny Guests

Evening is settling over the porch, a lantern is glowing on the post, and a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sits at the top of the steps with her silky ears and her chestnut and white coat looking absolutely picture perfect. Beside her, a row of yellow ducklings stands in a neat line along the boards, all facing the yard, like a very small audience waiting for the garden to put on a show. A faded doormat and a few potted plants frame the scene, and the light on the wood is the warm gold of a quiet summer evening.

Cavaliers are among the friendliest small dogs around. They were bred as lap companions, and they tend to want company more than anything, which makes them easygoing with almost anyone, human or animal. That sociable streak is also why they dislike being left alone for long stretches. Regular walks, short training sessions and plenty of cuddles keep a Cavalier happy, and their soft, feathery coat needs regular brushing, particularly around the ears and chest.

Porch steps are a classic pet hangout, and a good safe one if the area is fenced or the pets are supervised. A dog on a leash or in a fenced yard has a much easier time staying out of trouble.

Whatever the ducklings are watching for, the Cavalier seems happy to watch it too. Some evenings are just made for sitting side by side. Quiet company is a talent of its own.
