A Black Cat Gave Three Chicks a Ride Across the Yard
A black cat strides down a dirt path between garden pots and muddy boots, ears forward, golden eyes aimed straight at the lens. On his back, three tiny yellow chicks hold on like passengers on a very small, very fluffy bus. The evening light is going amber behind them, and a lamp glows over a doorway in the background.
Black cats get a lot of attention for their looks, and they happen to be a good case for good pet adoption. Shelters often report that black cats wait longer for homes, though they are every bit as affectionate and playful as cats in other colors. Their glossy coats also tend to show off sunshine with a reddish glow, which fits the golden-hour feel here.
Cats are natural walkers with a famously smooth gait: they place their back paws almost exactly where their front paws just stepped, which helps them move quietly and keeps the body level. That steady, unhurried pace is probably why the chicks look so comfortable up there. It is one of the more graceful ways to cross a yard.
Where this parade is headed, nobody knows. The cat looks calm and purposeful, and the chicks are along for the scenery. It is a short trip across the yard, but with that much fluff on board it looks like a grand tour.
