A Persian Cat and Six Ducklings Looked Out Over the Quiet Pond
At the edge of a small pond dotted with lily pads, a cream Persian sits with her long coat fluffed around her and her gold-green eyes fixed on the water. Beside her, six yellow ducklings stand in a loose cluster on the stones, their orange bills pointed toward the same stretch of water. The ducklings in front look up at the cat, and a few at the back gaze toward the pond. Behind them, a pair of rubber boots, a tipped blue bucket, a flower pot and a gray door suggest a busy backyard. The water is dark and still, and the light is soft.
Ducklings are natural water birds, and as they grow they will love to swim, but very young ducklings should only have short, warm and supervised swims, since they do not have their waterproof feathers yet and can chill. Ponds can also be hazardous with slippery banks, so keep a close eye on small ones. Persians are calm, quiet cats that usually prefer indoor life, and a cat should never be left alone with baby birds. If you are planning a pond or a flock, a local poultry keeper or your vet can help you build a safe setup.
The water is waiting, and the ducklings seem excited about it. The cat sits beside them with calm, serious eyes, as if she is the one in charge of the view.
