The Dachshund Lay Down, and a Tiny Explorer Saw Her Chance
Lying flat on a rumpled blanket, a black and tan Dachshund holds perfectly still while a small brown bunny perches on top of his back like a tiny lookout. The bunny's ears are straight up, her paws tucked neatly, and she surveys the room as if she has just conquered a mountain. The dog's long snout points forward, his dark eyes calm and patient, and behind them are a basket of toys, a folded throw, and an open doorway full of afternoon light.
Dachshunds were originally bred to follow scents into burrows, so they are curious, clever, and often stubborn. That long, low body is charming, but it also needs some care. Many vets advise against letting these dogs jump from high furniture or climb many stairs, since their backs can be vulnerable, and keeping them at a healthy weight helps protect them. A bunny sitting on a dog is not a problem for the dog's back as long as she is light and the dog is comfortable, but supervision is always smart. Rabbits explore by climbing and sniffing, and a calm dog who allows it is a real gift to a curious bunny.
There is great dignity in being someone's hill. The Dachshund does not twitch or sigh. He just lies there with the steady patience of a dog who knows this is an important job. The bunny, meanwhile, is having a wonderful view. A good friend is sometimes the one who stays still while you climb.
