The Red Shiba Chose the Cool Spot Under the Apple Tree to Chat
Dappled light falls through the apple leaves as a red Shiba Inu and a brown and white calf rest on the ground nose to nose. The Shiba's coat glows a warm orange, her ears pointing forward, while the calf lies with legs folded and chin low, white blaze catching the sun. A watering can, a pair of rubber boots, and a basket sit by a porch behind them, and a few small apples have dropped nearby.
Shade matters for every animal on a warm day, and a tree like this one makes a good resting place. Calves can overheat in strong sun, so access to shade and clean water is an important part of keeping them comfortable. Dogs also need a cool spot and plenty of fresh water. Fallen fruit can be a hazard for both, since too many apples can upset a stomach, and rotting fruit can attract wasps and mold. Picking up windfalls helps. Shibas are intelligent, tidy, and a bit independent, so one that chooses to lie right beside a calf is paying that calf a nice compliment.
The two look at each other across a short stretch of ground, as though discussing the weather. Neither seems to be in a rush. The air is warm and the day is slow. Under a tree, in the shade, with a friend close by, even a quiet afternoon can feel like a small celebration.
