A White Cat Led the Chicks Through the Meadow as Dusk Fell
Dusk is settling over the yard, and a white cat steps lightly through the long grass, her tail low and her ears forward. Behind and beside her, four fluffy yellow chicks follow, their tiny feet marching through clover and little purple flowers. A wooden fence and a warm porch light glow in the distance. The whole scene has the soft, dreamy feel of the last light of a summer day.
White cats come in many varieties, and some with blue eyes have an increased chance of being deaf, so a vet check is a good idea for any new white cat. All cats, regardless of color, are natural hunters and explorers, and many enjoy a stroll through the grass. Outdoors, though, there are hazards to watch out for, such as ticks, traffic and certain plants, and chicks are extra vulnerable to cold, wet grass and predators. Young birds should only be outside for brief, closely supervised moments in warm weather, with a safe pen. If you are curious about letting cats and chicks share space, your vet or a local poultry expert can help you plan.
The little parade moves slowly, and no one is hurrying. The white cat leads with a calm confidence, and the chicks trust her step by step. By the time the porch light is fully lit, they will all be back home.
