The Siamese Walked the Fence Rail While the Chicks Marched Below
The old wooden fence has a new sentry. A pale blue point Siamese cat walks along the rail, her paws placed carefully, her head lowered toward the grass below. There, four little yellow chicks scurry along, peeping and looking up at her. The evening sun is low and warm, and a neighbor's house window glows in the background.
Cats are skilled climbers and balancers, thanks to their flexible spines and quick reflexes, and a fence rail is a classic highway. But it can also be a risk, since a cat can fall or get hurt, and outdoor cats face dangers like traffic and other animals. Many vets recommend giving cats safe outdoor time, such as a fenced area or a catio. Siamese cats are lively, intelligent and talkative, and they usually enjoy being close to their people. Chicks on the ground need a safe, fenced pen and should never wander freely, since predators and cold can threaten them. Always supervise any cat and chick together, and wash your hands after handling the birds.
The Siamese is the lookout, and the chicks are her crew. Together, they make a small parade at the end of the day. The sun slips lower, and everyone moves along at the same slow pace. Somewhere in the distance a porch light clicks on, and the little group keeps moving, in no hurry to go anywhere in particular.
