Under the Little Apple Tree, a Havanese Kept a Lamb Company
A potted apple tree hangs red fruit over the rug, and beneath it a black-and-white Havanese has stretched out with his face pressed to the floor. A little white lamb lies next to him with her chin resting on her front legs, her eyes soft and her ears drooping. Throws, a basket of blankets and a mug sit around them, so this is likely a farmhouse corner where the doors stay open. Sunlight slips through white curtains and lights the leaves.
Havanese are small, fluffy, friendly dogs that were bred as companions, so they are happiest when they have company. Many get along with other animals, but they still need supervision with livestock. A lamb is a prey animal and can be frightened by sudden movement or barking, so a calm dog is the best friend a lamb can have. Lambs also need a safe, dry place, access to clean water and a proper diet. Fruit trees add charm, but fallen apples can ferment, and apple seeds are best kept out of pet bowls. Offer a few clean slices at most, and check with your vet before adding new treats. Shade and rest are good for any young animal, so a quiet spot under a tree is a good idea.
The apples sway above them, and the lamb leans a little closer to her friend. It is a gentle kind of afternoon.
