The Smallest Dinosaur in the Neighborhood Just Wandered Out to the Front Walk
The porch light is on, a jack-o'-lantern glows by the door, and the smallest dinosaur in the neighborhood has wandered out onto the front walk. A cream kitten with wavy fur and enormous ears is bundled in a fleecy green hoodie complete with soft felt spikes running down her back and a tail of her own trailing behind. She sits with her white paws together, copper eyes shining, looking a little startled by her own fearsome reptile disguise. Fallen leaves gather along the edges of the concrete path.
If you'd like your cat to join the costume fun, choose the outfit carefully. The best options are lightweight, loose enough to allow normal movement and breathing, and free of dangling strings, buttons, bells, or small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed. Avoid anything that covers the eyes, ears, or whiskers. Try the costume on at home for just a minute or two, with plenty of treats, and watch your cat's body language. Flattened ears, a twitching tail, freezing in place, or trying to wriggle out all mean it's time to take it off. Many cats are happier with a simple festive collar or bandana instead.
Out on the sidewalk, a little extra supervision is wise, too. Dark evenings, passing cars, and excited trick-or-treaters can startle even a calm kitten.
She may look like a dinosaur, but the only thing she's likely to roar about is dinner.
