A Brown Tabby Acts Totally Uninterested in the Marshmallow Cocoa

The marshmallows are floating, the steam has mostly faded, and the brown tabby is giving the whole situation a long, thoughtful look. He sits beside a white mug on a rustic wooden table, his striped coat blending with the warm wood, his green eyes turned politely away as though he has no interest at all. Behind him, a couch with a plaid pillow, a glowing tree and a window full of daylight make a cozy holiday corner.

Cats have a curious relationship with human drinks, and cocoa is a good example of what to keep away from them. Chocolate contains theobromine, which cats cannot process well, and sweetened drinks add sugar they do not need. Milk isn't a good idea either, because many adult cats are lactose intolerant and can get an upset stomach. A bowl of fresh water is a far better treat for a thirsty cat. Keep mugs covered or out of reach, and wipe up spills quickly. If your cat laps up something questionable, call your vet.

We'll call him Moose. He sits perfectly still, a gentleman pretending to admire the pine branches while he waits to see whether anyone leaves the room. Cats are masters of patience, after all. When the mug finally gets taken away, he'll shrug and head off in search of a sunnier spot.
