Under the Thanksgiving Table, a Whole Other Party Was Going On

Down below the tablecloth, there's a whole other party going on. A fluffy ginger Maine Coon kitten has stretched out on the wooden floor beneath the dinner table, front paws crossed, tufted ears perked, and sleepy amber eyes looking up as if he owns the place. All around him are the feet of Thanksgiving guests: a pair of white sneakers, cozy shearling slippers, and a thick knitted sock stretched out in the foreground. Above, the table holds dishes of cranberries and leftovers, and the room beyond is happily cluttered with toys, a plaid blanket, and the remains of a busy day.

Maine Coons are known as gentle giants of the cat world, and even as kittens they tend to be friendly and sociable. They often enjoy being right in the middle of family life, which makes a spot under the dinner table a natural choice. During gatherings, though, a kitten underfoot can easily get stepped on or trip someone carrying a hot dish. Let guests know there's a small cat in the room, and consider setting up a bed nearby that's clearly out of the walkway. Under-table areas also collect dropped food, including bones and onion-laced bites, so a quick sweep after the meal is a good idea.

This ginger kitten seems perfectly at ease amid all the shuffling feet. He may not have a chair at the table, but he's definitely found the coziest seat in the house.
