The Freshly Carved Jack-o'-Lantern Had Something Unexpected Sticking Out the Top
The jack-o'-lantern on the table has a toothy grin, triangle eyes, and something unexpected sticking out of its top: a black cat. Only her head and shoulders are visible above the pumpkin's cut rim, her glossy fur a perfect contrast to the bright orange shell, and her round yellow eyes gaze upward with wide-eyed wonder. The carved lid with its stem rests behind her ears like a little hat. Around the pumpkin, a gray dish towel, a spoon, scattered seeds, a mug, keys, and a ball of black yarn show that carving time was in full swing until she claimed the finished product.
Black cats are the unofficial mascots of Halloween, thanks to centuries of folklore linking them to witches and bad luck. In some places, though, black cats are considered good luck, and their owners would say they are just as affectionate and playful as cats of any other color. Black coats appear in many breeds and mixed-breed cats, and some black cats develop a faint rusty or brownish tint when they spend lots of time in the sun. If you are thinking about adopting, black cats are worth a close look, since they are sometimes overlooked in shelters simply because of their color.
This little lady clearly does not believe in any superstitions. As far as she is concerned, the pumpkin was carved just for her, and it makes a perfect Halloween throne.
