The Santa Hat Was Two Sizes Too Big. The Puppy Wore It Anyway.
The Santa hat is a little too big, and the black Newfoundland puppy wears it with great dignity anyway. He rests on a chunky cream knit blanket in front of a stone fireplace, with a garland of greenery and a checkered scarf draped above the mantel. His soft dark coat looks like velvet, his eyes are deep and thoughtful, and a worn teddy bear and a few toys are scattered on the floor behind him.
Newfoundlands are large, sweet-natured dogs bred as working water rescue partners, and they are often nicknamed gentle giants. They have thick double coats that need regular brushing, and they can drool a fair bit. Their size means a puppy will quickly go from lap dog to something that does not fit on the couch, so early training on manners such as sitting calmly and walking politely on a leash is time well spent. Around a fireplace, keep a screen or gate in place so curious paws and tails stay away from embers, and watch that a large fluffy dog does not overheat lying too close to the heat.
The hat slips a bit, the fire crackles and the teddy bear keeps watch. It is a quiet cozy evening, and the puppy looks like he has just discovered that Christmas is mostly about warm blankets and company.
