This Christmas Stocking Came Pre-Filled With One Curly Puppy

Only a curly apricot head sticks out of the giant stocking, with its white cuff folded around the puppy's neck like a snug scarf. A young Poodle has snuggled into the red knitted sleeve, eyes round and soft, and appears to have decided this is the best seat in the house. Behind him the sofa is covered with plaid blankets and a pair of glasses sits on the side table, all signs of a family that has been busy and cozy all day.

Poodles are intelligent, trainable dogs that come in several sizes and are often happiest when given a job or a game. Their curly coats shed little but need regular brushing and trimming to prevent tangles. Puppies like to burrow into soft things because it feels secure, like a den, and a warm blanket or stocking can bring comfort, especially in winter. Make sure the puppy is not stuck and can move out freely, and keep loose threads from the knit fabric out of the mouth, since swallowed yarn is hard on the digestive tract. A dog bed with high edges can offer the same snug feeling for everyday naps.

Santa may fill stockings with candy, but this one is already full of puppy. It may be the best present of the year, a small curly face poking out of the wool with nothing but sleepy contentment.
