The Stockings Were Hung and the Jack Russell Was Out Cold
Three cream knit stockings hang from a garland-covered mantel, and on the rug just below them a small Jack Russell Terrier is sound asleep. Her white and tan coat is a little rumpled, her eyes are closed and one ear is flipped over. In the background, a couch with a green blanket, a plush bunny and some toys are scattered around, as if the party has already come and gone.
Stockings are a sweet holiday tradition, and many families include one for the dog. If you fill one for your pup, stick to dog-safe treats and toys that are the right size for her. Avoid anything with chocolate, raisins or xylitol, and keep stockings out of reach until it's time to open them. Some dogs may try to grab the contents on their own, so hang them high enough to be safe.
Terriers have a lot of energy and often fall asleep suddenly after a burst of activity. A deep nap is a sign that they have used up that energy. Provide a warm, quiet place, and let sleeping dogs lie. Dogs often twitch and make little noises when they dream, and that is perfectly normal.
The stockings hang still, and the puppy dreams on. Santa could walk right through, and this one wouldn't notice. The quiet room and the soft light make it a perfect afternoon for it.
