The Cream Cat Looked Up at the Tree Lights With Total Wonder
Chin lifted and amber eyes wide, a cream Exotic Shorthair stares up at something just out of frame, with the twinkling tree behind her glowing like a distant constellation. Her round face, small nose, and short plush coat make her look like a perfect storybook cat. The living room around her, with a sofa, a chunky knit blanket, and a pile of scattered items, looks happily lived in.
Cats often look up because something above has caught their eye, perhaps a moving light, a shiny ornament, or a sound. Twinkling lights draw the gaze of many cats, and the glowing tree may seem like a magical new object in the house. Exotic Shorthairs are gentle, quiet cats who enjoy calm company, and many are content to sit and observe for long stretches.
Cats who like the tree may need a few ground rules. Keep lights and cords tucked away, use unbreakable ornaments at the bottom, and avoid tinsel altogether, since swallowed tinsel can be dangerous. A pet-safe water cover for the tree stand keeps cats from drinking tree water, which can contain preservatives or bacteria. If your pet seems unwell after being near the tree, call your vet.
This cat, though, has no mischief in mind. She simply sits in the soft light, watching the sparkles with quiet wonder, a small cream-colored spectator of the season.
