The King of the Backyard Was a Golden Puppy in a Fluffy Mane
A big, fluffy tan mane circles the face of a deep red-gold puppy, who sits solemnly in the grass with his ears hidden inside the costume. His brown eyes are warm and serious, and his nose is black and shiny. Behind him, a wooden fence, a garbage can and a pot of orange mums sit beside a small pumpkin, and fall leaves scatter across the lawn. The effect is of a very small lion who has no idea he is not fierce.
Golden Retrievers have a thick double coat that sheds throughout the year, so a lion mane costume can be warm. Keep any dress-up short, especially on a sunny afternoon, and watch for panting or restlessness. Goldens are gentle, friendly dogs that love to be near people and are known for their patience with children. Puppies need plenty of play and chew toys. A costume should never cover the eyes, nose or mouth, and should come off if the puppy is stressed. Your vet can answer questions about coat care and comfort.
A gentle lion with a sweet face may be the best Halloween costume of all. He sits patiently in the yard, as though waiting for a treat, and the fall leaves make a royal carpet. All he needs now is a crown, and a long, happy nap.
