Sparky Got Tangled in the Christmas Lights and Stayed Dignified
A glowing strand of green-wired lights loops around his body, and the Miniature Schnauzer lies on a plaid blanket, looking off to the side with a dignified air, as if being decorated were his idea. His bushy eyebrows and whiskery beard are lit with the soft glow of the bulbs. Behind him, a cardboard box of decorations sits open near a window, and a Christmas tree glimmers in the corner. Wrapping paper, a pair of glasses, and a few pinecones are scattered across the table behind him, evidence of a busy decorating day.
String lights are one of the biggest holiday hazards for dogs. A dog can chew through the wires and be shocked, or swallow bulbs, and tangled cords can wrap around legs or necks. If your dog gets tangled, unplug the lights first, then gently free him, and call your vet if he has chewed on any part. Always keep lights unplugged while decorating and place cords out of reach.
Miniature Schnauzers are alert and clever, with a big terrier personality. They tend to follow their families from room to room and can get curious about whatever is happening. Giving him a job, like sitting on a blanket while you decorate, and rewarding him often with treats helps keep him out of trouble, and out of the lights. A treat for good behavior, plus a gentle untangle afterward, makes the whole thing a funny memory instead of a scary one.
We'll call him Sparky. He insists he's the best-looking ornament in the house, and the glow does suit him.
