Mochi Hopped Into the Gift Box and Became the Present
Wrinkled forehead, round dark eyes, and one very small black nose rise over the edge of a cardboard box. A fawn Pug puppy sits among crumpled brown paper, and a red velvet bow has been fastened to the side of the box. In the background, a Christmas tree glimmers, a gray couch holds some blankets, and morning light fills the room. Nobody had to be told who the present was.
Pugs are charming, affectionate companions with a flat face that gives them their expressive look. That flat face has a downside, however. Pugs and other short-nosed breeds can have trouble breathing, especially in heat or during heavy exercise, so keep walks gentle, avoid hot days, and provide shade and water. They also tend to gain weight easily, so measured meals and a few healthy treats are a smart habit. Your vet can help you watch for any breathing concerns.
Boxes are a great puppy toy because they offer a hiding place and a lot of paper to rustle. Just keep an eye on small bits of tape, staples, and paper that might be swallowed. This little one, whom we will call Mochi, looks perfectly pleased with the arrangement. The box fits her exactly, the bow makes her look wrapped, and she is happy to be delivered anywhere a family needs a smile. Best present of the day, and still no complaints.
