Slate Found the Pie Spoon and Appointed Herself Taste Tester

The pie is cooling, the spoon is within reach, and a silver-blue Russian Blue cat has decided that quality control is her job. Her tongue is out, her eyes are half closed, and the spoon holds a bright orange scoop of pumpkin filling. A finished pie rests on the counter behind her next to a folded kitchen towel and some cinnamon sticks, and sunshine pours in through the kitchen window.

Plain pumpkin is sometimes recommended by vets in small amounts for pets with certain tummy troubles, but pie filling is a different story. It usually has sugar, spices, and sometimes ingredients such as nutmeg that are not good for cats. Cats also cannot taste sweetness the way people do, so what attracts them is often the texture or the fat in a dish. If a cat gets into holiday desserts, call your vet if she seems unwell.

Russian Blues are known for their dense, silvery coat and green eyes, and they tend to be gentle, quiet cats that attach strongly to their families. Many are cautious with strangers but affectionate at home. We will call this one Slate, for the soft grey of her fur. She does not seem to know she is not supposed to be here. The spoon was just sitting there, and Slate is a cat who knows an invitation when she sees one.
