After the Gifts Were Opened, the Schnauzer Claimed the Wrapping Paper
After the big unwrapping, a salt and pepper Miniature Schnauzer named Pepper has made a bed out of the leftover wrapping paper. She lies on a crinkly heap of silver and white snowflake paper with her chin down and her eyes closed, her whiskers resting on the folds. Behind her, a tree twinkles, a navy blanket lies on the couch and the table holds scissors, tape and a few sprigs of greenery. A stuffed reindeer toy peeks out from the paper beside her, as if it has been tucked in too.
Wrapping paper is a happy playground for a dog, but it should be cleaned up quickly. Eating paper, ribbon or tape can upset the stomach or even cause a blockage, and metallic or glittery paper is especially unwelcome. Gather everything into a bag once the gifts are open, and keep scissors and tape out of reach. Schnauzers are lively, intelligent dogs that often enjoy a good tear-and-shred game with an old towel or a toy. After a busy morning, many dogs fall asleep as the excitement fades, and a soft bed in a quiet corner is perfect for that.
Pepper is clearly worn out by the morning's events. She sleeps deeply on her crinkly bed, as if she has earned every minute. The paper will still be there later, and so will she, probably in exactly the same position, with the same happy snore.
