A Giant-Breed Puppy Looked Up at the Tree Like It Was a Forest
Tilting her broad brown head up and to the right, a Newfoundland puppy stares at the twinkling lights of a Christmas tree. Her coat is thick and fluffy, and her eyes are soft and dark. The tree glows with warm lights, wooden bead garland, and pinecone ornaments, and behind her are a couch with cozy blankets, a mug, and a pair of reading glasses on a coffee table.
Newfoundlands are large, gentle dogs, famous for their sweet temperament and love of water. They are often called gentle giants, and even puppies are heavy and clumsy at first. A thick double coat needs regular brushing, especially during shedding season, and they can overheat in warm houses, so keep the room comfortable. Growing puppies of giant breeds need carefully managed exercise and good nutrition, which a vet can help plan. Around a Christmas tree, a heavy puppy with a wagging tail can easily knock things over, so secure the tree and keep glass ornaments higher up.
For now, she is calm and mesmerized, and the lights twinkle in her eyes. The tree towers above her like a magical forest. She has not yet realized how big she will become, and it is a sweet reminder that all great gentle giants start out looking up. When she finally turns around, there will be a wagging tail the size of a broom waiting to greet everybody in the house.
