A Pink-Eared Kitten Popped Out of the Gift Box Like a Surprise
Out of an open cardboard box with a red bow on the lid, a pink Sphynx kitten looks up with enormous ears and round, golden-green eyes. Her wrinkled little face rests right at the rim, and one tiny paw grips the cardboard. Behind the box, a folded blanket and pine sprigs with pinecones sit on a counter, and a tidy kitchen glows in soft daylight.
Cats and boxes go together for a reason. A snug, enclosed space makes a cat feel hidden and secure, and for a hairless breed like the Sphynx, the cardboard also holds in warmth. This makes a plain gift box one of the best presents a cat can get, and it costs nothing. To make it safe, remove tape, staples, plastic wrap, and ribbons, since a kitten might chew or swallow them. Keep the box away from the counter edge if she is a jumper, and skip any box that held food or chemicals, which may leave a scent or residue. Sphynx cats tend to love warmth and company, so adding a soft blanket inside is a kind touch on a chilly day.
They are also very social, so a box in the middle of the action is better than one tucked away in a quiet room.
As far as this kitten is concerned, the present was never inside the box. The box is the present.
