A Delivery Box Arrived and the German Shepherd Handled the Unboxing Himself

A delivery box arrived, and a black and tan German Shepherd took care of unpacking it, along with the box itself. Torn pieces of cardboard are scattered across the hardwood floor in every direction, from tiny flakes to big jagged chunks, and the remains of the box sit slumped to one side. The shepherd stands in the middle of it all, huge ears straight up, head tilted, and dark eyes wide with alarm, frozen like a teenager caught sneaking in after curfew. Behind him, a cluttered dresser, a laundry pile, a pair of sneakers, and some plastic bags hint that this busy home has plenty of other things to explore.

German Shepherds are working dogs, bred to herd and guard, and they have quick minds that need regular challenges. Without enough to do, many will create a project of their own, and shredding is a satisfying one. Some trainers actually recommend a supervised shred box as enrichment. You can fill a plain cardboard box with crumpled paper and a few treats, let the dog tear it open, then pick up the pieces afterward so none get eaten. Add daily walks, obedience practice, scent games, and puzzle toys, and many shepherds become calmer and more settled at home.

Next time, this pup might get a box of his own on purpose. Until then, someone has a lot of sweeping to do, and a very alert helper eager to supervise.
