A Ragdoll Cat Froze the Instant the Sandwich Hit the Floor
Blue eyes as round as marbles, a seal point Ragdoll lies flat on the kitchen floor beside a sandwich with a bite missing. Pink ham peeks from between two slices of bread, a bit of lettuce has fallen onto the tiles, and crumbs trail back toward the counter. The cat's whiskers are spread, her ears are tilted slightly back, and her dark paws are stretched in front of her.
The floor is warmed by a patch of afternoon light, a plaid dish towel hangs from a cabinet door, and a food container rests on a counter in the background. We'll call her Waffle. She appears to have a story about how the sandwich reached the floor, and it likely involves gravity.
Cats are opportunists, and a sandwich left within reach is hard to resist. Some deli meats are very salty, and ingredients like onions, garlic, and certain sauces are harmful for cats, so stolen lunches are worth taking seriously. If she only had a nibble of plain bread or meat, it is usually not a problem, but if she ate onion, garlic, or something very fatty, call your vet. Prevent thefts by covering food, keeping plates off the edge of the counter, and feeding your cat regular meals on schedule. Ragdolls are gentle, relaxed cats that tend to be easygoing, but even the calmest cat can be sneaky when there's ham involved. Clean up crumbs after the fact so the temptation isn't left behind.
Waffle holds perfectly still, round-eyed and caught, hoping that if she doesn't move the sandwich won't notice her.
