The Border Collie Swears the Bookshelf Tipped All on Its Own
Dozens of old paperbacks lie in a sprawling heap across the floor, spilling from a bookshelf that has tipped on its side. In the middle of it sits a red and white Border Collie with wide, startled eyes, looking sideways as though checking who is about to walk in. A sofa with a green blanket and a warm lamp light the cozy room behind her. It is the kind of mess that only a very energetic dog can create.
Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, and they are famous for speed, stamina and a brain that never stops working. A dog like that can tear through a living room if she has nothing to do, especially in a house where she is left alone for hours. She needs daily jobs, such as fetch, agility, scent games, or learning a new trick every week. A bored collie may start herding household objects or chasing shadows, which is a sign she needs more to do.
Tall bookshelves should be secured to the wall, since a bump from a big, fast dog can tip them, and that also protects children. If your dog gets caught in a fall, check her over for bruises and ask your vet if anything seems off.
She looks utterly surprised, as though the shelf made the decision on its own. The books will need restacking, but the librarian's spirit seems perfectly fine.
