The Dishes Were Soaking Nicely Until the Tabby Found a Seat
Somebody left the dishes to soak, and a plump red tabby decided the sink was the best seat in the house. He sits right on top of a dinner plate, front paws planted in a smear of leftover sauce, with a bowl of pasta, a glass, and a blue sponge crowded around him. His round copper eyes look straight ahead, and his flat little face wears a calm, slightly smug expression.
Behind him the kitchen is bright and ordinary: a dish rack with forks sticking up, a houseplant on the windowsill, a towel hanging from the oven door. A few crumbs have scattered across the counter, which suggests this sink visit was not a quick one.
Cats are drawn to sinks for good reasons. The basin is smooth, cool, and snug, and many cats like a spot that surrounds them on all sides. Water is another draw, since some cats enjoy watching a dripping faucet. If your cat likes the kitchen sink, rinse dishes promptly and keep an eye out for sharp knives, glass, and cleaning products, none of which belong anywhere near paws or tongues. Food scraps with onions, garlic, or heavy seasoning can upset a cat's stomach, so talk to your vet if you are unsure what is safe.
For now, the tabby seems perfectly content, a king on a porcelain throne. The dishes can wait a little longer, because he clearly has no plans to move.
