A Fluffy White Cat Climbed Into the Sink Right on Top of the Dishes
Of all the places in the kitchen, Snowball the white Norwegian Forest Cat picked the sink, and she picked it while it was full. She sits upright among plates streaked with sauce, forks, a blue sponge and a glass, her thick coat spread like a cloud around her. Her ears are pulled back a little and her copper eyes look straight at the room with a mix of poise and embarrassment. A dish towel, a canvas bag and a small plant crowd the counter behind her, and bright light bounces off the steel.
Norwegian Forest Cats are large, sturdy cats from Scandinavia with a waterproof double coat built for cold winters. They are known as friendly, gentle and good climbers, and many are curious about running water. A sink is cool, smooth and echoing, and it is often a favorite resting spot in warm weather. It also holds interesting food smells, which makes a dirty sink especially tempting. For safety, it is wise to keep sharp knives, cleaning products and dish detergent out of reach, and to rinse residue from any surface your cat likes to sit on. Long-haired cats like this one also need regular brushing to prevent tangles. If your cat licks soap or cleaner, call your vet right away for advice.
Snowball will be lifted out and given a damp towel, and she will accept it with royal patience. The dishes can wait a little longer.
