A Black Cocker Spaniel Turned a Box Into Cardboard Confetti
Cardboard confetti lies all over the floor, and a torn-up box slumps at the edge of the picture. Licorice the black Cocker Spaniel sits in the middle of it with her long, glossy ears falling beside her face and a small, crooked smile that gives her away. Little flecks of cardboard cling to her coat, and a basket of slippers, a plant and a gray blanket sit in the soft light beyond her. She looks like a dog that has finished an important project and wants the credit.
Cocker Spaniels have a reputation for being merry, gentle and eager to please. They were originally bred to flush game birds, so they like to use their mouths and noses, and many enjoy carrying and chewing things. Cardboard is a popular target because it tears easily and makes satisfying noise. Small bits are usually harmless, but a dog that swallows a lot can have digestive upset, so clean up quickly and talk to your vet if your dog eats a large amount. Offering safe things to shred, such as a cardboard box you have prepared for a supervised play session, can be a fun outlet. Cockers also need regular grooming, especially around the ears, which should be checked for dirt and moisture. Daily walks help keep this sweet breed busy.
Licorice will get a good sweep-up and a cuddle. Her smile suggests she would do it all over again.
