The Royal Gardener Carries His Basket of Roses as if It Were Made of Glass
Gentle brown eyes peer out from a massive head of glossy black fur, and this big dog carries a wicker basket overflowing with blooms as tenderly as if it were made of glass. Pink cabbage roses, a few deep red ones and green leaves spill over the rim, cradled in one enormous paw. The royal gardener wears a dark green coat with gold epaulettes and buttons, a cream embroidered waistcoat and cravat and a sage-colored apron stitched with a delicate rose motif, with a pair of pruning shears tucked into the pocket. Stone columns and green drapery fill the background.
Newfoundlands are famous for their gentle, patient temperament, earning them a reputation as nanny dogs and gentle giants. The breed was developed as a working dog for fishermen in Newfoundland, and many have a natural love of water, helped by webbed feet and a thick, water-resistant coat. They are known for water rescue work. Newfies are large and heavy, so they need plenty of space, a healthy diet and joint-friendly exercise. Their coats shed and benefit from regular brushing, and many drool, so keeping a towel handy is part of life with one.
It is easy to imagine this kind-hearted gardener tending the palace rose beds with great care, pausing only to nap in the shade of the hedges. Every rose in the garden would be lucky to have him.
