The British Shorthair King Settled Into His Throne Like It Was Made for Him
Round cheeks, copper eyes and a smooth blue-grey coat give this British Shorthair a look of calm authority. He sits comfortably on a carved wooden throne, with one gray paw resting on the lion-headed armrest, and a thick red velvet cape trimmed with gold laurel leaves is draped over his shoulders. Gold epaulettes and a cream shirt show beneath. Behind him, a stone column and brown shadows frame the royal seat. He looks entirely at ease, as though the throne had been made just for him. His fur has a soft, powdery look, and every tassel and fold of the red velvet has been painted with deep, rich shadows.
British Shorthairs are sturdy, calm cats with a dense, plush coat and a round face. They are usually easygoing, loyal and happy to relax nearby, rather than demanding constant attention. Their thick coat sheds seasonally and benefits from weekly brushing. They are known to be big-boned and can gain weight easily, so portion control and gentle play are important, and a vet can help with the right diet. Many British Shorthairs prefer sitting beside you instead of in your lap, and they enjoy a quiet, predictable routine.
The king rules with calm patience and a mild disinterest in most things. His great decrees are probably few: mealtime is sacred, and the best chair is his. His subjects obey happily, since a king this comfortable is a very good king indeed.
