The Tallest Captain in the Fleet Wore Pink and Took the Helm
A pink tricorn hat trimmed in gold lace sits on the head of a harlequin Great Dane, whose white face is splashed with black patches and whose brown eyes look gentle and thoughtful. His long, noble nose and soft jowls give him a kind, serious air. He wears a pink coat with golden floral embroidery, gold buttons, and big gold fringed epaulettes. Behind him, painted roses and golden scrolls swirl across a pastel wall. It is a stately, sweet portrait of a very tall sailor.
Great Danes are gentle giants that often think they are lap dogs. Harlequin is a pattern of black patches on a white coat. Danes need space and a big comfy bed, and they grow quickly as puppies, so exercise should be gentle while their joints develop. Large, deep-chested breeds can suffer from a dangerous stomach condition called bloat, so ask your vet about feeding routines and warning signs. They are usually friendly and patient with people, and they love to lean against their favorite humans. A sturdy collar or harness and calm training go a long way.
The captain stands at the helm, scanning the horizon with his big, wise eyes. His crew is small and so is the ship, but nobody has ever doubted his leadership. When the voyage ends, he will gladly share the quarterdeck with a very large nap.
