The Astronomer Stayed Up All Night With His Charts and Candle
It is a cozy, cluttered scientist's table, and a huge black Newfoundland is sitting right in the middle of it. He wears a velvet cap and a dark robe embroidered with gold stars and crescent moons, and a lace collar frames his furry chest. A gleaming brass orrery stands at his right, an old book and a little compass rest at his left, and a star chart is spread under his paw. A candle burns at the edge, and the whole scene feels as though it is the middle of a very long night of study.
The Dutch masters loved this kind of still life of books, instruments, and maps. In this painting, the deep black fur against the dark robe is lifted by tiny golden highlights, so you can see his thick coat and still read each embroidered star.
Newfoundlands are giant, gentle dogs known for being sweet, patient, and wonderful with children. They were bred as working dogs around the water, so many love swimming, and their thick double coat is water-resistant. That coat needs frequent brushing, and drooling is part of the package. They need space and moderate exercise but can overheat easily, so keep them cool. Large breeds benefit from careful feeding and regular vet visits to watch their joints and heart.
If the stars were handing out gold medals for gentleness, he would surely be the first in line.
