A Dapple Dachshund Knight Guards the Castle in Shining Armor

AI imagedachshundknightoil portrait

Silver plate armor gleams across the shoulders of a dapple Dachshund, with a deep red cloak edged in gold thrown over one side. His long ears are speckled gray and tan, his dark eyes are steady, and his chin is raised just a little. The metal reflects the warm candlelight so well you can almost count the rivets, and the whole portrait has the hush of an old castle hall. Even his paws are hidden behind the armor, which makes him seem even more mysterious.

Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to follow badgers into their burrows, which explains their bold personalities and love of digging and sniffing. That long back is delicate, so vets often advise keeping them at a healthy weight, limiting jumping off high furniture and using ramps or steps. A dapple coat, with its mottled patches of color, is one of several patterns the breed can have.

A knight is supposed to be tall and imposing, and this one wins on attitude alone. There is something wonderfully brave about a small dog who truly believes he can take on any dragon. The artist caught that spirit with a clear gaze and a proud, straight neck, as though his armor were a perfect fit and the world had better take notice. The red cloak adds a splash of warm color that keeps the cold metal from feeling stern.

Every castle could use a defender with this much heart, even if the dragons are mostly squeaky toys.
